Internet gaming, or i-gaming, is the hot topic in the gaming community. Nearly every week, i-gaming is the subject of a report in popular media outlets. In recent months, major U.S.-based casino operators have announced strategic alliances with European i-gaming operators. Gaming equipment manufacturers have dedicated significant resources to i-gaming, ranging from developing online games to the acquisition of Internet-based businesses.
Most members of the AGEM Index witnessed their stock prices decline throughout the month of November 2011 on speculation of another economic downturn as signs of a credit crunch surrounding the Eurozone debt crisis were being reported. Much of this fear was alleviated in the last few days of trading in November due to action taken by major central banks. Early forecasts on holiday retail sales also reflected promising signs that consumer spending is expected to grow...
I love fine dining, and those of you who have ever met me in person know I’m telling you the truth when I talk about my passion for gourmet cuisine. That’s one area in life where New Jersey’s governor Chris Christie and I are kindred spirits. We are both obviously connoisseurs of exceptional foods, and a lot of it. Unfortunately today, many casinos are so caught up in marketing technology that they have let go of the focus on personal relationships that Las Vegas was built on.
The new Danish Gambling Act has been long under way. The act was unanimously passed by the Danish Parliament in June 2010 and, after an in-depth investigation, approved by the European Commission on Sept. 20, 2011. The act will put an end to the current monopoly and liberalize the market. It will come into force on Jan. 1, 2012 (all references to the act are at the time of press).
Though 2011 certainly had its ups and downs, for the most part, the year is ending on a high, with many in the industry optimistic for a turnaround soon. Last year, a key phrase in our forecast essays was “cautious optimism,” but this year that word “cautious” has been removed for many, with excitement over recovering numbers in most economic areas and gaming trends, hopeful news coming out of some markets, not to mention technological advances and that topic that just won’t leave the room, Internet gaming.
