Wendover, Nev., is a small hamlet located on the Nevada-Utah border, approximately 150 miles from the Great Salt Lake. Serving the mixed Utah-Idaho-Nevada gaming market are five casinos offering the standard variety of table games, including Blackjack, Craps, Roulette and other assorted casino games. Wendover draws a majority of its customers from the Salt Lake City area, as well as from Southern Idaho.
We cringe when we hear the term “one size fits all.” If you’ve met us in person, you know why. Pat could pass for an ex-NFL lineman and Tom frequently hears “How’s the weather up there?” One size also suggests clothes of dubious quality hawked by sprawling and impersonal one-stop-shopping mega stores.
Fortunately for us, and many others, the North American Gaming Regulators Association (NAGRA) is a one-stop, one-size-fits-all organization that is the exception to these stereotypes, meeting the needs of its unique membership through a variety of creative approaches.
When discussing game selection for a casino, you might think about commenting on a particular game theme that has gained customer popularity and is easily recognizable by title or theme. But let’s take a look at another game type that continues to grow year after year and that is a virtual blur when discussed: The limited-to-no actual theme recognition. As you might have already guessed, it is the multi-game!
Technology and systems. They are stuff that dreams are made of — “This system will make my life easier, faster and better! I’ll leave my office at 5pm everyday!” — and the stuff of nightmares, too — “Remember when the system was down forever during our last upgrade and I didn’t sleep for days?” The difference between those two extremes is all in the planning and implementation process.
We’ve been hearing about a lot of high-tech and sleek casino scams recently. Last May it was the multi-million-dollar international Mini Baccarat scam. In June it was hidden cameras spying players’ hole cards in a high-stakes Poker game at the Borgata in Atlantic City. Reports of these scams have been glossy and even Hollywoodesque, with the Borgata scam likened to scenes in the James Bond film Casino Royale. But it’s not always high-tech gadgetry that gets the money from casino coffers. I never used anything of the sort to cheat casinos out of millions.
I am frequently asked why I left the East Coast and a mega-casino resort in favor of the West and a midsized casino resort. The staged tongue-in-cheek response: Oregon was as far away as I could conceivably travel from my ex-wife and still be located in the continental United States. The reality is, as an outdoor enthusiast, Oregon offers me a wide array of beautiful and magnificent natural resources.
Sophomore year of college was challenging. It was a period marked with intense feelings of alienation, self-loathing and emotional regression. Oh, wait, that’s now. Sophomore year was awesome! None of my friends had made anything of themselves yet; there was not a single life-sucking lawyer, super-specialized plastic surgeon or other manifestation of a respectable professional amongst us.
In CRST Van Expedited Inc. v. Werner Enterprises Inc., 479 F.3d 1099 (9th Cir. 2007), the Ninth Circuit ruled that a California employer could be held liable for corporate raiding because the employees it hired were under contract with their former employer. The decision serves as a warning to employers who seek to recruit a competitor’s employees who are under contract.
The very well-respected Howard Hughes knew that germs were everywhere. Microbe-caused illnesses are major health risks -- and Mr. Hughes was well aware of it. But he probably didn't know that in the Hughes Tool Company's patented drill bit and silver mines, he held the solution to killing those microscopic germs.
About a year ago, Casino Enterprise Management published an article of mine titled, "Why and How to Develop an Internal Cage Cashier Training School." I have received many replies from colleagues all over the nation wanting to know more details. Therefore, I have decided to reveal more and better examples of how you too can develop and implement your very own Cage Cashier School.
