02/13/2004 - Jackie Gleason Theater of Performing Arts Lights up Miami with a New Galaxy® LED Electronic Message

Brookings, S.D. - February 01, 2004 - Daktronics Inc. (Nasdaq -
DAKT) announces that the Jackie Gleason Theater of Performing Arts, a 2700-seat, state-of-the-art performing arts facility in the heart of beautiful Miami Beach, contracted with Bengis Signs, Inc. to install a new amber, full-matrix Galaxy® light emitting diode (LED) electronic message center in an Art Deco style sign in front of the theater.
The Galaxy® display, manufactured by Daktronics, features 64 shades of amber to create eye-catching graphics and basic animations that show depth and shading. The display also exhibits multiple font styles and many text entry effects, which the theater uses to advertise upcoming shows and events. This two-sided display, like all other Daktronics displays, has bright and readable LEDs that can be seen clearly from a distance.
Joel Serkes, president and owner of Bengis Signs, Inc., said that the management of the 50-year-old pastel green and white Art Deco style theater is very happy with their new sign and electronic display.
"Twelve years ago we installed their first sign. It included a message center with incandescent bulbs," said Serkes. "Because of the humidity and the salt water in Miami, the display had to be maintained frequently to help it run at its best." Serkes went on to state that as soon at the theater contacted him about contracting for a new sign, a LED display was the first thought he had.
Serkes also stated, "The old incandescent display drew a lot of power and the theater is very happy with the LED display's lower power usage."
By using eye-catching LEDs instead of incandescent lamps, monthly electricity bills can be significantly lowered and maintenance on the display decreases. LEDs have a lifetime of approximately 100,000 hours, which is an advantage over incandescent bulbs, which have filaments that constantly burn out or fail.
This Galaxy® display measures approximately 4' by 16' and features 9-inch characters. It is operated with Venus® 1500 software, which can control the display, or multiple displays, from one central location.
