01/09/2004 - Budget Will Include Less Than $1 Billion in Tribal Money

California (Indian gaming) -Mark Martin, Robert Salladay, San Francisco Chronicle - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to ask California Indian tribes to contribute less than $1 billion in casino revenue to help close the state's budget deficit, a lower financial burden than demanded by former Gov. Gray Davis but still a political risk for the new governor. Schwarzenegger began his effort to wrangle money out of Indian tribes by naming a former official from the Pete Wilson administration as his lead negotiator in dealing with the casino operators. The negotiator, Daniel Kolkey, said agreements the tribes had signed with Davis needed to be rewritten to be "fairer to the interests of the state, California consumers and local communities.''
