01/07/2004 - Green Bay Chamber Chips in on Gaming Compact Lawsuit

Wisconsin (Indian gaming) - John Dipko, Green Bay Press-Gazette - The Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce has added its two cents to a lawsuit challenging the governor’s power to negotiate Native American gaming compacts. In a brief filed with the state Supreme Court, the chamber said the Oneida Tribe of Indians’ gaming activities help the area economy through job creation, service payments and investment in local businesses. The lawsuit, filed last year by Republican legislative leaders, argues Gov. Jim Doyle exceeded his power in the state Constitution to renegotiate a gaming compact with the Forest County Potawatomi. The amended compact has no expiration date and eases operating restrictions. Doyle has signed similar compacts with Wisconsin’s 10 other tribes including the Oneidas, whose Ashwaubenon casino is among the most successful gaming operations of its kind in the state.
