12/29/2003 - Tribes Begin New Talks with New Mexico on Gambling Pacts

Mew Mexico (Indian gaming) - Associated Press - Nine New Mexico Indian tribes have launched talks with the state to renegotiate their 2001 gambling agreements. The tribes are looking to bolster their casinos’ business edge using free food and hotel rooms, the Albuquerque Journal reported in a copyright story appearing in Sunday editions. The Journal reported that tribes also want more limits on horse racetrack competition. However, Gov. Bill Richardson said they’ll have to pay for any changes. “The governor would not consider any more changes unless there were proper safeguards, and the state receives more revenue than the current percentage,” Richardson spokesman Pahl Shipley said Friday. Shipley characterized the talks, which began in November, as “preliminary but inconclusive.”
