12/22/2003 - Indian Tribes Renew Call for Video Lottery at Tracks

Leaders of three Indian tribes today echoed Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn's revived call for legalizing video lottery terminals at dog and race tracks. A House panel took testimony with an eye on Gov. Rick Perry possibly calling a spring special session to overhaul the way Texas funds public schools. Perry has said he will call legislators into session if a consensus plan emerges. Representatives of the Kickapoo, Alabama-Coushatta and Tigua tribes each told the House Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee they support legalizing VLTs, which are like slot machines. Strayhorn, reminding legislators that any form of state-approved gambling also becomes legal for Native American tribes, said: “We need to approach the tribes respectfully as partners, or we risk losing them entirely.”
