12/05/2003 - Seminole Tribe Unveils Miami Casino

Florida (Indian gaming) - Jerry Berrios, Miami Herald Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News - The Seminole Tribe of Florida, continuing to bolster its image as the builders of premier destinations for South Florida's gaming establishments, hosted a glitzy tour Thursday of its latest creation -- a Las Vegas-style Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, expected to open in the spring on the tribe's Hollywood reservation. "Welcome to Hollywood," Tribal Council member Max Osceola Jr. said to a cheering crowd of some 600 invited guests who munched on barbecue and Seminole fry bread before touring the 100-acre Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on the northwest corner of U.S. 441 and Stirling Road, former home of a trailer park. When it opens, the sprawling complex will be one of only two of its kind in the state. The first phase of a similar facility opened in June on the Seminoles' Tampa reservation. The tribe bankrolled both sites with $410 million. The Seminoles are not modest about their intentions. "This facility is going to change the way the tribe, entertainment and hospitality are perceived in South Florida," said James Allen, chief executive officer of gaming operations. "There is truly nothing like it." The Seminoles are expecting that 20,000 people will walk through the complex daily, Allen said.
