07/21/2004 - A New Commissioner: Ireland's Shortest Living Bet @ gamebookers

SLIGO, Ireland -- Top sports-betting firm gamebookers.ie must hold the record for the shortest living bet in Irish political history as the market on Ireland's EU Commissioner was settled within an hour of opening. A surprise early announcement was made this evening that Charlie McCreevy would be Ireland's new EU Commissioner, not long after gamebookers had opened a market on which politico would fill the post.

Eddie Lee, gamebookers' Irish spokesman said "I had just finished work and was settling down on front of the TV when I saw Mr McCreevy's face on the opening of RTE news. I guessed right away it wasn't going to be about an increase in the price of cigarettes so we of course immediately withdrew very attractive offer of 5/4 against Mr McCreevy taking up the Commissioner's post. It’s just as well he didn't get wind of our speculating on his chance of becoming Ireland's EU commissioner - he could have made his new post even more lucrative by having a sure bet on it with gamebookers! We had also opened a market on the extent of Bertie's imminent, much discussed cabinet reshuffle - that market will probably reopen after a brief review of the situation."
