07/12/2004 - Caesars Palace Welcomes Young Fundraiser Alexandra Scott to the New Roman Plaza to Help Fight Childr

Sam Solovey, from NBC TV's 'The Apprentice' to set up $1,000 a cup lemonade stand

LAS VEGAS -- Caesars Palace in Las Vegas will welcome 8-year-old cancer fundraiser Alexandra Scott, of Wynnewood, Penn., to its new Roman Plaza on Tuesday, July 13, for an event that will help fight cancer in children.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m. PDT, Alexandra and Sam Solovey of NBC TV's "The Apprentice" will staff a unique lemonade cart on the new five-acre Plaza to raise funds that will benefit pediatric cancer treatment and research. Alexandra, who has battled cancer since she was an infant, to date has raised more than $480,000 for her cancer charity -- Alex's Lemonade Stand Fund.

Solovey, who famously tried to sell lemonade for $1,000 on the hit TV show, will sell cups of Caesars lemonade for $1,000, the menu price of $3.50, or any price in between. All funds received for lemonade during the lemonade cart's first month of operation will be donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand Fund. Alexandra's foundation has earmarked half of these funds for the Las Vegas-based Nevada Cancer Institute. The other half will support a hospital where leading-edge research and treatment has benefited young cancer victims everywhere, and where Alex is treated -- the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"Alex is living proof that one person can make a difference," said Caesars Palace President Mark Juliano. "We hope that Las Vegas will open its heart and its pocketbook to keep her movement strong and to give rise to many more lemonade stands across the country."

Checks made payable to Alex's Lemonade Stand Fund can be mailed care of Caesars Palace, 3570 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Las Vegas NV 89109.

The daughter of Jay and Liz Scott, Alex was only one year old when she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a severe type of childhood cancer. While receiving treatments, Alex met other children who also were sick, and she decided to help raise money for pediatric cancer research. At age 4, she came up with a fundraising idea that was a natural for a young child- to set up a little lemonade stand on a warm day and sell lemonade to some thirsty neighbors. To date, she is nearly half-way to her goal of raising $1 million.

Alex also has been the recipient of many prestigious awards: the 2003 Volvo for Life Hero Award, The Philadelphia Foundation Philanthropist of the Year, Philadelphia 76ers Basketball Hometown Hero -- two consecutive years, the 2003 Good Housekeeping Heroes for Health Award and a Commendation from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
