2009 IGE After Words

Despite the current economic downturn, January’s inaugural International Gaming Expo (IGE) saw a total of 16,692 visitors from 126 territories travel to London in order to check out the latest and best in the world of low-stake and remote gaming, lotteries, betting and land-based casino products. The new show was staged across the entire ground floor of the capital’s Earls Court 1 and 2 exhibition halls.

Nothing made bigger news at the 2008 Global Gaming Expo than the road-to-Damascus moment evidently experienced by Gary Loveman. As CEO of Harrah’s Entertainment, he engineered a buyout of Caesars Entertainment and then an LBO by private-equity funds Texas Pacific Group and Apollo Management. Those moves left Harrah’s wobbling under $27 billion in debt just as credit markets tightened and consumer spending went south.
